Tracing history through the Gansu corridor, from the rainbow mountains to the Mogao Caves.

Traveling to China can be an incredible experience, but it's important to be prepared. Here are 10 essential things you need to know before your journey.

1. Internet Access & VPN

Many Western websites and apps (Google, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp) are blocked in China. You'll need a reliable VPN service to access them. Set it up before you arrive, as VPN websites are also blocked.

2. Mobile Payments

Cash is becoming rare in China. Most transactions use Alipay or WeChat Pay. You can link your international credit card to these apps, making payments much easier. Download and set up these apps before your trip.

3. Language Barrier

English is not widely spoken outside major tourist areas. Download translation apps like Google Translate (with offline packs) or Microsoft Translator. Learning a few basic Mandarin phrases will go a long way.

4. Visa Requirements

Most visitors need a visa to enter China. Apply well in advance through the Chinese embassy or consulate. Some cities offer 144-hour visa-free transit if you're traveling to a third country.

5. Air Quality

Air quality can be a concern in major cities. Check the AQI (Air Quality Index) daily and consider wearing a mask on high-pollution days. Many hotels have air purifiers.
