The Story
The Bund, meaning 'outer beach' in English, is Shanghai's most famous waterfront promenade. Developed in the 1840s after the First Opium War, it became the center of international trade and finance. The 1.5-kilometer stretch along the Huangpu River features 52 buildings representing various architectural styles from Gothic to Art Deco, earning it the nickname 'Museum of International Architecture.' These buildings housed banks, trading companies, and consulates during Shanghai's heyday as the 'Paris of the East.' The Bund witnessed Shanghai's transformation from a fishing village to a global financial hub. Today, it stands as a symbol of Shanghai's past and present, with the historic colonial buildings on one side and the futuristic Pudong skyline on the other.
