The Story
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding was established in 1987 with just 6 rescued giant pandas. Today, it has grown into the world's leading panda research and breeding facility, housing over 100 giant pandas and contributing significantly to panda conservation efforts. The base was created to address the critical decline in panda populations, which had dropped to fewer than 1,000 individuals in the wild. Through dedicated research and breeding programs, the base has successfully bred over 200 pandas, many of which have been reintroduced to the wild or sent to zoos worldwide as part of international conservation partnerships. The facility also houses red pandas, which share the same habitat. The base combines scientific research with public education, allowing visitors to observe pandas in naturalistic enclosures while learning about conservation efforts.
